To be fair most people on the ship have jobs that boil down to “do whatever the computer tells you to do”

I think it’s mentioned that the crew are mostly random volunteers with more or less no qualifications. The ship’s computer is the one actually in charge and just selects whoever it sees as best suited to a task.

Keit has a job there by virtue of just happening to end up on the ship with nowhere else to go.
