‘Clayface,’ which hit theaters on Oct. 23, introduces a new villain into the DC Comics film universe
Clayface is taking over the big screen.
The psychological thriller, which hit theaters on Oct. 23, tells the origin story of the terrifying Gotham City villain Clayface, as portrayed by Tom Rhys Harries . The DC Comics film is based on the eponymous character created in the original Detective Comics in 1940, but most of the film’s characters were not introduced in the series.
Clayface , which was directed by James Watkins, follows struggling actor Matt Hagen whose face becomes disfigured after a knife attack. In a desperate attempt to save his looks, he asks scientist Dr. Caitlyn Corr ( Naomi Ackie ) for help, but the experiment results in his body possessing shape-shifting powers.
“Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self… but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiraling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge,” the synopsis teases.
As time goes on, Clayface becomes one of Batman’s most ruthless foes, but the famed DCU superhero does not appear in the film. Prior to the feature film, the character of Clayface appeared in various DCU series — including Batman: The Animated Series , Creature Commandos and Harley Quinn.
Here’s everything to know about the cast of Clayface .
Tom Rhys Harries leads the Clayface cast as the villain himself, whose birth name is Matt Hagen.
In the film, Hagen is a struggling actor in Gotham City who gets brutally attacked by a gangster, and his face is left disfigured as a result. He becomes desperate to restore his looks, so he enlists the help of Dr. Corr to perform an experiment on him.
Although the serum initially works and restores Hagen’s face, it quickly takes on even stronger powers and transforms him into a shape-shifting entity. The results take a massive toll on Hagen’s life, and he eventually becomes one of Batman’s most dangerous enemies, Clayface.
Prior to starring as the villain, Rhys Harries acted in various movies and television shows — including The Gentlemen , Doctor Who and Suspicion. Director Watkins previously told PEOPLE that he and the rest of the crew knew the Welsh actor was meant to play the lead.
“We met everybody, and Tom came in and I just thought he just felt right , and then I spent about four or five times auditioning him,” Watkins recalled. “We met, we had a great chat. We talked about the character, we talked about stuff and felt like we were seeing it the same way. The nature of these things is high stakes, so I think we did two, three reads and then we did chemistry reads and it was just trying to explore.”
Meanwhile, Rhys Harries remembered hearing he scored the role and subsequently taking a bike ride to “distract myself” for several hours.
Dr. Corr, played by Naomi Ackie, is known for being a “fringe” scientist and biotech CEO, who is open to the idea of different forms of science. Dr. Corr injects an experimental regenerative serum into Hagen in hopes of restoring his scarred face. However, her serum becomes too powerful and turns him into a shape-shifter.
In addition to acting as one of Matt’s scientific confidants, Dr. Corr also becomes involved in his personal life and is a potential love interest. It doesn’t appear that Dr. Corr previously appeared in the DCU, but a similar doctor worked with Hagen in Batman: The Animated Series and The Dark Interlude , per DC Universe .
Before starring in Clayface , Ackie appeared in Master of None , The End of the F***ing World, Blink Twice and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker . Ahead of the film’s release, Ackie acknowledged the pressure of making a DCU film.
“This is a big studio film,” she told Entertainment Weekly . “There’s a lot of eyes on it. You wanna make sure you’re doing a good job, and you’re not hated by people.”
Max Minghella portrays John Borrelli, a Gotham City police detective who is also romantically involved with Dr. Corr.
However, his relationship with Dr. Corr could become more complicated because of her feelings toward Hagen. At the same time, Borrelli is leading the investigation into Clayface’s violent crime spree.
Minghella is a British actor who has previously appeared in a myriad of films and TV shows — including The Social Network , The Internship, The Ides of March and The Handmaid’s Tale .
“It has genuinely been one of the great professional experiences of my life,” Minghella said of working on Clayface in an interview with T2 Online . “I had the most amazing time working on this. Despite the ambition of the movie, it felt unbelievably intimate.”
When it came to his character, Minghella described Borrelli as having a “clear moral centre” but also “wasn’t just a Dudley-Do-Right character.”
Joshua James joined Clayface as Corey Bowery, who becomes acquainted with Hagen after his experimental accident.
Before appearing in Clayface , James was known for his roles in Cyrano, Andor and Black Mirror .
Although Clayface helms the film as the main villain, Markos Szabo isn’t far behind him.
David Dencik plays the role of the Gotham City mobster, who brutally slices open Hagen’s face after learning that he was involved with his girlfriend, Mia (Joana Ribeiro). The attack leads to Hagen’s transformation into Clayface.
“Marcus Szabo is a nightclub owner and what some people may consider to be a villain in the movie,” Dencik said of his character on Bollywood Hungama . “On the surface, he owns a nightclub, but he’s also a central crime figure in Gotham City. He is known to many people he works in close affiliation with the mayor’s office, the police department, and the judges in the courts. He gives them all bribes. Should anything actually end up in court, he also bribes the jury. He does all of this with a smile on his face. He also likes a good time, beautiful women… I think we know this kind of guy, don’t we?”
Dencik is a Swedish-Danish actor who has had notable roles in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo , Chernobyl and No Time to Die .
