In Review: Detective Comics (2016-) #1114 – Dawn and Imminent Destruction

Synopsis: As dawn—and the imminent destruction that daylight will bring—approaches in Gotham City, Batman finds himself out of options. There is only one hope left to save his city, and it lies with the cold, calculating Mr. Freeze. Now, shoulder to(cold) shoulder with one of his greatest foes, the Caped Crusader must fight his way across Gotham in one last desperate attempt to save the city.
As Gotham continues to be overwhelmed by prehistoric plant life thanks to Poison Ivy, Batman seeks help from Victor Freeze and his love interest, Nora. The plan is to activate Freeze’s device and plunge Gotham into another ice age, killing the prehistoric plants that threaten to wipe out all human life in the city. But before they can reach the device, they must fight their way through the deadly foliage.
Mikel Janin and Clayton Henry put in a solid shift on the art for this issue. We see Batman venture into the coldest parts of Gotham to recruit Mr Freeze and Nora to help save the city from extinction. The frozen landscape of Freeze’s home is brilliantly realised, to the point where I could almost feel the cold. The opening page, which briefly recaps Freeze’s backstory and his obsession with Nora, is effective and quickly establishes her character. Another highlight is the plant giant that Batman, Freeze and Nora encounter as they arrive at Freeze’s laboratory.
This was a pretty solid issue, with some nice moments between Mr Freeze, Batman and Nora. I particularly enjoyed the moment when Batman tells Freeze to help rescue a little girl before heading to his lab to activate the device that will freeze Gotham and kill the prehistoric plants threatening the city.
On the downside, this story picks up from Batman #14 and forms part of an arc spanning multiple titles, which we won’t be following. The old wallet can only stretch to so many comics per month, and we have to prioritise. However, this issue does bring a satisfying end to Poison Ivy’s scheme to wipe out Gotham.
