The Borg are back — but this time, the legendary Star Trek villains aren't quite as evil as they usually are. The classic cybernetic aliens from the Delta Quadrant just ended up being the unsung heroes of the franchise's latest spinoff.
IDW recently released Star Trek: The Last Starship #12 , the shocking finale of the series that revived Captain Kirk from death back in November 2025. Now, nearly a year later, Kirk and Sato are putting aside their differences in one last effort to save Starfleet, and it's been revealed that the Borg's comeback played a crucial role in restoring peace and order to the Galaxy. They also helped wrap the story up nicely — saving Captain Kirk and Queen Agnes Jurati in the process.
In The Last Starship #12, the last remaining characters who are staying true to Starfleet's ideals are all in one place, ready to rebuild after the events of the mysterious Burn — but it might all be too late with the villainous Emerald Chain ready to put an end to things with a decisive and unrelenting attack.
As Sato, Kirk and the crews of the U.S.S. Omega and U.S.S. Challenger rally together, they don't want to go down without a fight or a sacrifice, and The Last Starship absolutely delivered a sacrifice that most were unlikely to see coming. Earlier entries in the series saw The Borg's Agnes Jurati resurrecting Kirk in the 32nd century , and it seemed like he might be the natural, noble hero to risk his life for the world.
Surprisingly, The Last Starship had other plans, and the Borg were part of it all. In the climactic issue, the Borg make history with a voluntary transfer of power, with Jurati giving her nanites to Captain Sato. He then ends up sacrificing himself to save the galaxy as well as Kirk and Jurati, who shared their own surprising romance in an earlier issue.
It marks a new era for the Borg, transitioning them from pure villains and into a much deeper and more complex role. Throughout Star Trek history, the Borg have sought out perfection at all costs, looking to assimilate all sentient life into their Collective and acting ruthlessly as a result. The Last Starship offers an interesting and more human side to the Borg, but it remains to be seen if other new stories will give them a similar approach or return to their more wicked roots.
In Season 2 of Star Trek: Picard , Alison Pill's Dr. Agnes Jurati was seen merging her body and mind with an alternate timeline's Borg Queen , making for a new Borg faction that changed the game for the franchise as a whole. It offered a new Collective: one that saw Jurati trying to lead the Borg into being more inclusive, with a voluntary hive mind seeking out those who were lonely or outcasts in life.
Jurati's initiative appears to have been effective, if The Last Starship is any indication. The selfless role the Borg played in the story's finale gave Jurati her humanity back, all while showing that these typically villainous characters can actually co-exist in the world of Star Trek without needing to conquer everything in sight. Whether they keep up the inclusivity or return to their destructive origins in future stories is another matter.
Star Trek: The Last Starship #12 is available now from IDW Publishing.
