Oh, what a disappointment. Guess I'll try Half-Life games.

Despite the reputation for never releasing Half-Life 3, there are 7 Half-Life single-player games, all well worth playing, and 2 Portal games that are canonically set in the same universe.

Alyx is probably the best VR game that isn’t a rhythm game.

Alyx it has no business being as incredible as it is. I feel like it's not talked about enough about how it set a new standard for all of gaming and nothing will live up to it.

It kinda sucks how VR games were mostly glorified tech demos for years, and when an actually good, full fledged AAA VR game came out, the decline of VR's popularity came soon after

Yup, the only multi replayable VR games are sim racing. So if you don't have a sim racing set up, it's just not worth the money.

And after you play Half-Life Alyx, all other VR games kinda just suck.

The best vr games are mods for already existing flat games. There was an explosion of them this year. And most of them are great ports that almost feel like native vr games. Doom 2016, eternal, doom 3, Titanfall 2, max Payne 2 and 3, resident evil games, Half Life 2 etc etc. And it's a really great feeling to be inside of the game that you played all those years ago.

HL 2 VR is soo good

9. u/SlowTurtle222 · 2026-10-27 20:44 UTC

I know, right?! It was the first game I launched when I bought my quest, and I honestly believe it's a better vr experience than HL alyx

How is Titanfall 2 VR? That honestly sounds like a freaking blast. That game has such a ridiculously insanely good, underrated campaign. Like I feel like it should be talked about more about how good the Titanfall 2 campaign is. The only downfall to it is how short it is.

Yeah I have a Quest 2 and rarely touch it. Every once in a while I check for new good games, but there really isn't anything. Still my favorite VR games are fallout, skyrim, and alyx, 2 of 3 being VR ports.

I imagine they hoped it would encourage adoption, and lead to more games being made, but... like, I suspect, a lot of people, I just thought "Looks cool. Wish I could play it. But I'm not getting a whole VR setup for just one game"

And frankly, I think there's just a ceiling on how many people will EVER be down for tech like this, no matter how good it gets. Much like with 3D, turns out most people find regular old 2D screens as "Immersive" as they'll ever need, and it comes without all the (Literal) headaches involved.

13. u/Atomedia · 2026-10-27 20:16 UTC

Facebook really did a lot of work in stopping VR from having a wider adoption

14. u/Foxiak14 · 2026-10-27 20:47 UTC

Yeah, turns out that gentrified VRChat with ads isn't exactly "tech of the future" people were interested in

15. u/Thick-Cartoonist-493 · 2026-10-27 17:41 UTC

No mam soy is cool in vr

It's extremely impressive, and I think most people who follow VR gaming at all have some awareness of it, even if they haven't played it. But VR is ultimately still niche compared to gaming in general, and Alyx in particular required a more robust setup than you could expect from most people.

My details might be a bit dated here, but as I recall you have to have a gaming PC that supports VR and can run Alyx. Then you need a headset - thankfully I do think the Quest works (either wireless or via cord) but I still believe a game like Alyx requires a setup that the average gamer doesn't have. The game has been talked about plenty by people who play VR games but I don't think it gets discussed outside of those circles for some expected reasons.

Don't even think it needs the qualifier, it's just that good.

18. u/shiethefemboy2 · 2026-10-27 15:38 UTC

8 if you count lost coast, 9 if you count half life source, 10 if you include black mesa (even if it's not official.)

19. u/TheScreaming_Narwhal · 2026-10-27 16:01 UTC

Counting Lost Coast and HLS is an extreme reach lol

20. u/jdsquint · 2026-10-27 16:38 UTC

Definitely not HL:S. Lost Coast is a tech demo, maybe as long as one chapter in HL2. I would include Black Mesa, but it's not a new story.
