Marvel Studios may be looking for a brand-new sci-fi horror anthology series to replace the MCU's Special Presentations, and Marvel Comics' Twilight Zone -style series, Journey into Mystery , would be perfect. Over the last 18 years, the MCU has adapted some of the comics' most thrilling, shocking, spectacular, and dramatic stories into live-action. One of Marvel Comics' most notable anthology series, however, has fallen under the radar, despite it being perfect for a television adaptation.
In recent years, the MCU has introduced a slew of new characters, including those in anthology projects such as Marvel's Special Presentations and the multiversal animated What If...? Although popular, these projects have received some criticism, particularly for how they handle certain characters. Adapting one of the comics' most beloved and iconic series, however, would be the perfect way to replace them and redeem some of the characters these projects have unfortunately neglected.
Initially published by Marvel Comics' predecessor, Atlas Comics, in 1952, Journey into Mystery provided an expansive and exciting way for the superhero comic series to explore a wide range of new characters, both good and evil. Journey into Mystery originally premiered as a horror anthology series, with the first issue featuring stories exploring zombies, witches, ghosts, and escaped prisoners. Subsequent issues famously debuted Thor, Jane Foster, Loki, the Absorbing Man, Mr. Hyde, and more.
Featuring Twilight Zone -style horror and sci-fi twists in practically every issue, Journey into Mystery lends itself naturally to a serialized Disney+ anthology series format. Marvel Studios has recently been paying homage to its comic roots, with the celebration of Marvel's First Family in The Fantastic Four: First Steps and the brilliant mentions of Jim Hammond's Human Torch android in VisionQuest bringing some of the comics' original heroes into the spotlight. This could continue in a Journey into Mystery adaptation.
A live-action series could serve as a showcase for the most bizarre, occult, and cosmic corners of Marvel's universe that don't fit into major movie franchises. Before introducing gods and superheroes, Journey into Mystery published standalone, twist-ending monster, sci-fi, and supernatural tales crafted by creators like Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Joe Kubert. It could lay a better foundation for the live-action MCU by introducing unexpected characters who can focus on world-building.
More recent stories in the comic series have focused primarily on Thor, Loki, and even Kid Loki's adventures, prompting Marvel to title the fifth episode of the live-action Loki series "Journey into Mystery." The anthology format would work best in the MCU, however, if Marvel decides to adapt it.
If done right, Journey into Mystery could be the MCU's next big project. Hopefully, it would handle its characters better than Marvel Studios' other anthology projects.
If Marvel does adapt Journey into Mystery into its own live-action MCU series, this wouldn't be the first time the franchise has included an anthology series. Marvel Studios' Special Presentations have featured short, standalone adventures for some characters, while the animated What If...? series explored the multiverse in an anthology format. But Journey into Mystery would be a far more impressive and exciting project than either of these properties, which have received criticism for neglecting their characters.
So far, Marvel Studios' Special Presentations have explored Werewolf by Night and Man-Thing's partnership, the Guardians of the Galaxy celebrating Christmas, and the Punisher fighting back against the Gnucci family. While the Guardians returned in their own trilogy-capper in 2023 and Frank Castle teamed up with Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day , Werewolf by Night and Man-Thing have been all but forgotten by Marvel Studios, not being seen since Werewolf by Night in 2022.
Your scores are shown below. The character with the highest number is your match. Read their description to discover which hero the universe chose for you.
Brilliant, driven, and uncompromising in your ambition. You believe that the right technology - in the right hands - can solve any problem, and you're confident enough in your own abilities to back that up. Beneath the armor and the bravado, you carry the weight of responsibility deeply. When it truly matters, you're willing to sacrifice everything.
Principled, courageous, and steadfast. You have an unshakeable sense of right and wrong, and no amount of pressure, politics, or power can make you compromise it. People trust you instinctively - not because you demand it, but because you've earned it. You lead not by authority but by example, and you will always get back up.
Strategic, precise, and formidably self-reliant. You don't need a suit or a superpower - your greatest weapon is your mind and your nerve. You keep your cards close, trust slowly, and operate three steps ahead of everyone else. Your past is complicated, but you've turned it into something that makes you nearly impossible to stop.
Powerful, honorable, and ultimately humbled by what truly matters. You came into your power believing it was your birthright - and then you learned it had to be earned. Your strength is immense, but your greatest growth came from learning to serve rather than reign. Loyal to your people, terrifying to your enemies, and always magnificent.
Quick-witted, deeply compassionate, and driven by a responsibility you didn't ask for. You've learned the hard way that great power comes with great cost - and you show up anyway. You stay grounded when others would ascend, and your humanity is your greatest strength. You make it look effortless. It never is.
This same criticism plagued the animated What If...? series throughout its three-season run, as its thrilling multiversal characters did not receive the development they deserved and were ignored by the MCU's live-action stories. The likes of the Guardians of the Multiverse, Infinity Ultron, Doctor Strange Supreme, Kahhori, Uatu the Watcher, and more have all been ignored by the live-action MCU, even though they deserved far more recognition and prominence, especially in the Multiverse Saga.
Introducing more grounded characters in a Journey into Mystery adaptation would create the opportunity for the MCU's live-action roster to get better developed. This series could even mark the return of Werewolf by Night, Man-Thing, the Leader, Echo, Moon Knight, She-Hulk, Mephisto, and Xu Xialing and the Ten Rings, all of whom have been neglected by Marvel Studios since their first appearances in the MCU. This makes Journey into Mystery the perfect replacement for some of the MCU's most lackluster projects.
While Journey into Mystery became more of a mystical and cosmic series in Marvel Comics, its original storylines focused primarily on standalone sci-fi and horror adventures, which makes it the perfect series to adapt in the modern era of the MCU. Horror has been on the rise in recent years , making it much more mainstream. Even DC Studios has branched out into horror, meaning Marvel Studios may be playing catch-up.
Marvel Studios has explored some horror stories in recent years, including Werewolf by Night, Agatha All Along, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Marvel Zombies, and even Thor: Love and Thunder , among others, with intense horror moments . However, the family-friendly, fun-loving Marvel style often means these horror stories are watered down and simplified, which takes away some of the shock and fear. Adapting Journey into Mystery could deliver Marvel's first genuine horror project.
Released in October 2026, DC Studios' Clayface has been a success as the DC Universe's first horror film, but given the awkward reception to some of the DCU's early projects, it's possible Marvel Studios could do it better.
While there have been problems with anthologies such as What If...? and the Special Presentations, Marvel could finally get it right if an adaptation of Journey into Mystery actually happens. Of course, nothing has been announced, but this would be the perfect anthology series for the MCU's future.
Created by Marvel Studios, the Marvel Cinematic Universe follows heroes across the galaxy and across realities as they defend the universe from evil.
