One of the nation’s leading scholars of Black comics and graphic novels, Dr. Sheena C. Howard, recently invited Dean George White Jr., School of Arts and Sciences, to contribute a chapter to her new edited volume, “Hip Hop and Comics.” Published by the University Press of Mississippi, the book examines the deep and dynamic connections between two powerful cultural movements that have shaped contemporary art, storytelling, and social critique.
Dean White’s chapter focuses on the groundbreaking animated television series “The Boondocks,” exploring how the show weaves together the aesthetics and politics of hip hop with the visual language of comics and animation. By situating “The Boondocks” within the broader traditions of Black graphic storytelling and hip hop culture, White’s contribution highlights the ways in which popular media can challenge conventions, question power, and open up new conversations about race, identity, and representation.
The inclusion of Dean White’s work in “Hip Hop and Comics” underscores the college’s growing impact in interdisciplinary scholarship at the intersections of visual culture, African American studies, and media studies.
