Curious. It doesn't say "The End." It says "Game over" which implies the main character probably lost/died. And the bad guys won.
Guess Jessica was for sure a bad guy without even knowing it

I thought it implies it was game over for the guy that just died. He was the one who last used the PC

Tanner was never in the game though. The kid from the town was however. We never saw him die. But based on the computer being buried I'm assuming a lot of time has passed and it's probably the kids computer and he died when the Worm came

My thought was that though he entered Maya's name, he could not fool the game. Which is why Jessica targeted him and let Maya go.

Yeah I think so. He also said he felt like he was going in circles, just like Jessica explained to Kevin during the flash-back.
7. u/Made_Bail · 2026-10-29 19:06 UTC
That's exactly my interpretation.

It’s gotta be that. Coz people use fake names in games all the time, so the name itself probably doesn’t matter.
9. u/shellbullet17 · 2026-10-29 18:58 UTC
Ehhhh Jessica targeted anyone, players or non players so long as they weren't in the "home base"
The game even "opened up" to let other players in for Jessica. Which is how they got there. I think Tanner was forfeit no matter what. Doesn't explain if Maya was a character though or if Kevin survived. Seeings as how his computer didn't, he probably didn't either

Maya say she “hears it”, which Jessica only did after being in the game. I’d say that means she’s in the game, unless she’s just lying to try to save herself from Jessica.

Jessica didn't hear it after being in the game, she heard it after leveling up. Kevin never said he heard it, did he? I think Maya being able to hear it means that everyone can now.

Or “the worm is awake” means that the worm is now free of the mountain and can be perceived by everyone in the world. Perhaps the game was a way to force someone, who turned out to be Jessica, to gather enough souls to awaken/release the worm into the world at large.

Oh I agree. I think Tanner found a loophole that put them both in the game. He was the body that entered the name, she was the person. So they both got stuck. That's how he went in circles and counted for massive XP and Maya could hear the worm

Tanner is saying “It’s like I’m going in circles”. Looks like the game isn’t letting him leave.
Also, Jessica said the houses are safe zone for *only* those who started the game. Since she specifically says only, this could mean that she could have targeted Tanner and Maya while they were in Kevin’s house, if they were part of the game. The counterpoint is that maybe she just didn’t bother trying to see if she could.
And it looks like Maya is able to continue on the path Tanner wasn’t. Either she isn’t part of the game and free to leave, or upon Jessica reaching level 100 the game is over from everyone else.
I don’t think we’ll get a clear answer, but to me it looks like the game adds whoever starts it, not the name inscribed within. I’ve checked the previous entries, but it looks like everyone entered their own name.

One correction: Jessica said she can't even open Kevin's door, so she probably couldn't have gotten to Tanner and Maya in there. That doesn't mean Tanner and Maya were completely safe, though. Kevin could have killed them if he decided to play.
16. u/Rum_N_Napalm · 2026-10-29 21:05 UTC
Good point, but you’ve just made me realize that if Maya and Tanner became players from entering town then they couldn’t have entered Kevin’s house.
Edit: oh, interesting, Kevin says most people who hadn’t played the game were able to escape until a certain point, then they got stuck. Perhaps there is some sort of “if you stay too long you become a player tyoe thing”
17. u/Made_Bail · 2026-10-29 19:01 UTC
I mean, then why let Maya go? Feels to me like she was never a player, but Tanner was, because he "played the game," even if it was to just betray someone.
18. u/shellbullet17 · 2026-10-29 19:03 UTC
Cause shes max level. Can't get any stronger. She only wanted to hear the worm. And since Tanner wasn't a player, free xp without decreasing the player pool
19. u/WingsofRain · 2026-10-29 19:36 UTC
but also it seems like you’re not able to hear the worm until you level up (kill someone) so that makes me wonder why Maya can hear the worm
20. u/ian9921 · 2026-10-29 19:47 UTC
Because now that it's awake it's loud enough for anyone to hear
