The mysterious droid threat gets its backstory and some First Order petty drama returns in The Fall of Kylo Ren #3, though it leaves one wishing we had more than two issues left!

I know I had plenty questions after The Fall of Kylo Ren #2 ‘s introduction to a strange new droid threat, and I’m sure many readers did too, so it was refreshing, though understandable, we got some answers already. Not everything’s been answered though, like what its original purpose was, what/who created the crystalline rock, or Umbral Shard as we now know is its name, nor why last issue we saw the Knights standing over a monk-like person holding the rock and yet Tava’s backstory about it doesn’t include such a moment (but a whole other way they got the Shard instead). We got enough to confirm what readers could mostly surmise after the last issue: the droid learns and comes back with that knowledge, upgraded in various ways. How this situation all got started, well, it was classic Knights of Ren cockiness. Hired to get the Umbral shard, they stole it from a collector, but then killed the guy they brought it to once they felt the way it gave them power after they connected with it through the ‘shadow’ aka dark side of the Force. But it was a double edged sword, as their connection linked them in a way the droid could always find them (which answers why destroying the Shard/abandoning it somewhere to avoid the droid aren’t options), per the final command of the man they killed. As for the words it repeats, the droid speaks in the dead being’s voice, so do they spell out his final message to them, like the first letters of each word make up a word itself, like an amalgam or something? Is it galactic coordinates? Regardless, how to stop it for good remains unanswered, but I’m betting they need to return to where the Knights’ betrayal started and cut this thing off at the source.

Due to all that backstory, the issue ends before the next fight begins, as the droid is back and packing lightsaber-ish blades out of its wrists. As great as the answers were, and the little character building we got with the family in the opening of the flashback and the Knights’ contact, once it was clear this background would take up the whole issue, it left me antsy reading it. As much as I was enjoying the story, I couldn’t help but thinking it needed to hurry up, to let more happen as there’s only 2 issues left after this. And while I was happy the bickering of Pryde and Hux came back, the brevity of it was like the viral cake frosting you light on fire to reveal a hidden message, though in this case it burned away to reveal we’re already done and on to the next issue. Soule’s pulled these particular tricks before and I’ve learned to sit down and be quiet, the final two issues putting me in place, but I couldn’t help but get the jitters.

With the art, it’s still Will Sliney with Guru-eFX on color and Joe Caramagna lettering. As I saw some people mention in the Reddit discussion thread , which helped explain the eerie sense I’d seen the new droid before, it really does look like a Bionicle . I still can’t quite get over its face though, as in the final panel of the issue, as threatening as it looks with extra armaments, imposing red color, buzzing wrist blades with sharp and dangerous sound FX, and imposing height, the face just seems goofy. It reminds me a little of a clown, even with the yellow glowing eyes, so it’s both a scary threat I’d eagerly run from but also kind of makes me laugh. But I do love the ship it rides around in! It looks like a mixture of a Venator -class Destroyer and Episode II Jedi Starfighter. The wings seem like the Venator ‘s body was split in two and then the Jedi Starighter’s hyperspace ring was put between them to hold the droid, while it was given one helluva engine upgrade. Imagine having that as a toy!! Elsewhere in the issue, the early sequence with Kylo hanging the Knights out to die in space was quite the look. The little icing effects over their outfits, in Tava’s hair, and her bloodshot oxygen thirsty eyes really emphasized how long he left them there, how long he pushed it. Gone is the boy who took Tava to dinner, instead we have a more assured young man, confident as he can be, pushing towards a future he’s been so desperate to find and make for his own.

Here are a few other things:

The Fall of Kylo Ren #3 makes backstory an entertaining proposition, even if it left me wishing we had more issues!
