I mean, isn't it in canon for Groundhog Day that he spent like a century in that loop or longer?

I'll have to rewatch that since I don't remember that little detail.

He spent roughly 33 years in loop according to fan blogs and reddit posts about it

I looked into it and, yeah, fan estimations is like 30-40 years. Though there was a cut line from the original script where he was supposed to have spent 10,000 years in the loop, a reference to the Buddhist doctrine that it takes 10,000 years for a soul to ascend to the next level.
But later on he purposely left it vague mostly to let the viewer take their own meaning and set their own length to his loop.

10,000 days is 27.3 years. maybe they mixed that up

It was 10,000 years. Earlier drafts of the script had a scene where Phil went to the library and read one page of a book every day to keep track of time. Eventually, he read every book in the library.

And when Bill Murray reads every book in that library... The first second of eternity... WILL HAVE PASSED

Some might say that's one hell of a long time, but I say that's one hell of a groundhog

If it was earlier drafts of the script, that doesn't mean they are accurate to the final project.

The writers of that movie said it was 30-40 years.

In the final version, but not always.

They said 30-40 years and that people should stop overthinking it because it's made up and none of it is real.
So "final version" means nothing.

Harold Ramis, the film's director and, importantly for this discussion, a practicing Buddhist, has said in multiple places that the original idea was 10 thousand years, as that is how long the human soul takes to reach perfection in Buddhism. This was not the case in the final version.

i highly recommend the novella: A Short Stay In Hell
18. u/Meritania · 2026-11-01 17:03 UTC
Not to be confused with ‘A short stay in Hull’ which also feels like time has stopped for an eternity.

10,000 days in the fire is long enough...
