Listen, as a Chicagoan, people constantly ask if the city's history is basically just this, across the whole city, from the 1920s until now. It's not, but honestly, It's a lot funnier to tell people it is. Whiskey fizzes and Tommy guns down at the speakeasy, a normal Tuesday night.

Noting this down 👀 (this comic is made by a European who never stepped foot on US soil)

You got it spot on!
Actually, jokes aside, we do still have some old speakeasies that are now just normal bars with funky entrances. Some of them need a password to get into.

It wasn't Chicago, but I once went to a speakeasy in DC that was through the kitchen of a Peruvian chicken restaurant. Nothing like getting shitfaced and coming out front for some fried plantains

A friend of mine runs a food truck and parks it outside a popular bar that closes around 2am. Arguably illegal, but nobody's around except the hungry drunks, so he does a brisk business for a good hour there.

I went to one in New York that was in a hotdog place! You had to step into a phone booth and the back opened I think. It was fucking awesome.

To be fair there are infinite tommy guns in Gotham, it seems. And this looks a lot like it. Plus Big O vibes from barkeep.

What's amazing is the sheer quantity of bosses, speakeasies, mugs, and tommy guns required for this to be a regular occurrence.
Weirdly the tommy guns are the rarest part of this. There will millions of the dang things in WW2, but in the 1920s, Colt hadn't automated the assembly yet, and they had immediately earned a reputation for being used by mobsters, so they stopped making them after the first 15,000 or so until WW2 created a mass market.
On the other side of the coin, Chicago reportedly had literally thousands of speakeasies by the late 1920s. You could blow up a dozen every weekend, and there'd still be thousands of them leftover. There might have been more speakeasies than legal restaurants.

You're right about the guns and speakeasies, but the bosses are actually super easy to get a ton of. You just call the owner of each place "boss" as a sign of respect, and so that the cops never know who the real bosses are. A sort of decentralized Mafia system where anybody with any actual authority knows who's really in charge, and makes sure the money goes to the right place.
And for the mugs, they buy 'em in bulk. Vinnie's cousin does wholesale down in Peoria, he got a whole shipment off the back of a truck. And you'll never know if that's criminal doublespeak or actual, literal, 100% legal truth.

Amazing. I will not be fact checking any of this, boss 🫡

Just remember that after your first 5000 comics in which 3 tommy guns get exploded, you've gotta switch to BARs or something.

I wanted to draw this weapon yesterday too, but it seemed too hard, so I drew an Uzi instead.

Hahah, not gonna lie I straight up use 3D models for cars, guns and buildings... I only have so much time on this earth and I'd rather focus on people 😅 thank you though!
