A lot of people that die cave diving are reported to have had a great job, loved their family or generally had a great life only to throw it away doing the dumbest hobby

And those people go to work and then cave diving without telling their family, so they can think they're still at work?

Despite everyone in these hobbies regularly reminding people to let someone know where they’re going at all times, otherwise intelligent people keep not doing that and getting stuck and dying because they think “well, I’ll just be really careful.”
I watched a YouTube video by a caver who preached this constantly and then one day filmed a video where he went “I’m just going to go straight in and back out, I know it’s bad, but this isn’t a full dive, just a quick vid to look at this new cave.” Then he noticed water rising in the cave and realized he hadn’t actually gone straight back like he thought. He did manage to make it out alive, and the whole video was about how even someone as experienced as him is susceptible to making stupid decisions. It doesn’t matter if your plan is to literally take one single step into the cave and then leave. ALWAYS LET SOMEONE KNOW WHERE YOU ARE

Its honestly a perfect example of how we forget how susceptible we are to the neurological quirks of being human.
Complacency on a societal end is a very bad thing that gets people killed. However biologically, complacency is just our brain taking a task we succeed at over and over again, and trying to make it more and more efficient by removing mental energy waste. If you keep checking for Thing, and you never experience Thing after hundreds and hundreds of times, your brain naturally wants to save that energy by not checking Thing. Its why people are so shocked when something bad does happen, because despite the known rates, THEY never experienced it, so its not real in their heads.
This is where professional oversight lives and breathes. There is no level of expertise at any activity or occupation that negates that pull to complacency. It is its own skill that needs to be tended to.

I wonder if he did that on purpose to make a point and scare some people a little.

I think I saw a movie like this, except instead of caves, the guy went out and fought a giant robot.

One guy left his wife and 8y old son for a brisk walk around the planet
He did return recently, 28 years later

The joke is ruined by the "being late from the factory part"
It almost implies hes inside a puppy asshole

I'm gonna be honest with ya buddy, I can confidently say no one else was thinking that.
13. u/WhyattThrash · 2026-11-07 20:36 UTC
Don't be so confident! I also went there, trying to figure out wth what I was seeing had to do with puppies

We have to thoroughly explore every hole in our understanding

Nah bro for a minute when I saw the second panel I was legitimately wondering if my man was digging around inside a giant dog's reproductive tract.

I’m confident your confidence was misplaced

I honestly was thinking something along those lines because it’s overall confusing, I didn’t know about the cave divers being happy statistic before reading the comments
